Today, we mark the beginning of the new ACE Center for Entrepreneurship and Management Education. We spring from the womb of the Asian Institute of Management, which gave birth and nurtured the original Asian Center for Entrepreneurship. In the 1970’s, when the Dragon economies of Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hongkong and Singapore were stupefying the world with their very high growth rates, the World Bank published a study of what enabled these countries to be so successful. I was a very young loan officer (to Brazil) and investment officer (to Asia and later Africa) then at the World Bank. Japan was leading the pack and the World Bank attributed this to a strong local market and a rather heavy emphasis on an outward looking production and marketing strategy focused on the larger global economy. This paper is excerpted from the author’s doctoral dissertation (Doctorate in Public Administration) from the University of the Philippines’ National College of Public Administration and Governance (NCPAG) in 2004. It was a pioneering and extensive study on entrepreneurship in the Philippines, basically answering the research question of “what motivates, encourages and influences entrepreneurs to set up and grow their businesses” so that the national government can formulate policies and strategies to propagate entrepreneurship and help build the nation through these enterprises. read more..
